We congratulate Ricardo Gómez Carrera, alumnus of the Economics Undergraduate Progam and the Applied Economics Masters Program at ITAM, for being honored with the Joaquín Xirau Icaza Economics Award in its VII edition. This renowned award, presented by the Colegio Mexicano through the Colmex Foundation, the Center for Economic Studies and the Xirau Icaza Fund, acknowledges mexican researchers for their outstanding contributions in the field of economics in Mexico, specially in issues related with the human capital formation for economic development.
Ricardo’s awarded work, titled “Mandatory Preschool and Student Test Scores: Evidence from Mexico”, analyzes the impact in obligatory preschool education in the student’s academic results, contributing relevant proof for educational policies development in the country. The award ceremony will take place this year at Colegio de Mexico.
Throughout his career, Ricardo Gómez Carrera has focused his research on development economics issues. His professional trajectory includes important roles in the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit, where he held positions like Director of Domestic Debt Issuance and Assistant Director of Public Debt Management. Between 2020 and 2024, he was Research Economist for Banco de Mexico, and currently he works as an economist at World Inequality Lab in Paris, France.
