Congratulations to Rafael Fernández de Castro, alumnus of the Social Sciences Undergraduate Program, for being honored with the “Distinguished Mexican” award from the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IMME) of the Secretary of Foreign Affairs.
Dr. Fernández de Castro was the founder of the International Relations Undergraduate Program at ITAM and served as Chair of the Department of International Studies. He has an extensive career in foreign policy, where he has played a key role in the public and private sectors, including: the United Nations Development Program, the Presidency of the Republic, Harvard University, the University of California at Berkeley, Georgetown University, ITAM and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is also the founder of Foreign Affairs magazine in spanish.
The presentation of this award took place at the Mexican Independence Day commemorative event in the city of Chula Vista, California. The Secretary of Foreign Affairs gives this award to people with Mexican nationality that have lived abroad for at least 5 consecutive years and that show an outstanding trajectory in diverse fields. Currently, he is the director of the Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies at the University of California at San Diego, and throughout his career he has been known for his leadership and contributions in putting the name of México on high.
